Soap: Coconut Orange Salt Soap
Okay. Here I am back in the ring for a second week in a row. Maybe I can really do this! Maybe this concept of this self-imposed year long experiment of trying out different recipes and different items in making soap could be a real thing?
I am starting to see myself. In this busy life, I’m here carving time to do something that matters to me and for me.
It feels rebellious.
It feels foreign.
I love it.
I’ll level with you- needing to get rid of oils that have been sitting around on my shelf is a totally totally valid reason to make a batch of soap.
In this case I had lots of coconut oil.
To be honest, curiosity got the best of me too. I’ve always read that coconut oil dries out skin and blah blah blah.
So I decided to give it a try on my own just to see how this soap might feel on my actual skin.
What I found so interesting about this soap was how thick it was. Rather than the typical soap I made with mix of hard and soft oils, this was a 100%, hard oil soap.
And so I noticed that in the crockpot as I was mixing it around. The batter was so so thick.
I could barely get my spatula to move.
As it started to cook and fully melt, the soap began to become more gelatinous and liquified. I truly didn’t know what was going to happen next when I finally got toward the end.
And as I was testing the soap to check it doneness, it was pretty amazing just to see all the stages that it went through.
I ended up choosing this nice bright orange essential oil to put into the soap. Then, I colored it with some buttercup yellow mica that turned… orange! Perfect!
I also included granulated pink Himalayan salt into the mix so that it would give a nice salty scent, exfoliation, and enhance the big bubbles that I was expecting in the soap.
if I could change anything, instead of a 10% superfat I would make it a 30%+ superfat to give the soap extra oils to enhance the lather’s creaminess. I would also add in coconut milk powder toward the end to increase the creaminess of the ladder.
And so there you have it 100% coconut oil orange dream salt soap.
It smells lovely.
I did try a little piece of it to wash my hands with and I do have to say, I love the smell. This is one hard hard bar of soap. It’s a little brick, it’s very tough. It’s very hard to even cut through, but it worked out very, very well.
